Harlem story

 

Harlem is a neighbourhood which is located in Manhattan. It is where the Harlem Renaissance was born in the 1920s. The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural and intellectual movement  including several areas of creation like art or jazz music with musicians liKe Duke Ellington or Louis Armstrong .

The Harlem Renaissance  also included poets as well as philosophers who debated ethnic pride and racial discrimination.  It had an impact on the life of Afro-Americans who were still discriminated in the 1920s. Thanks to their writings and workarts , the many  writers, musicians and artists changed the representation  of  Afro-Americans. But the Harlem Renaissance  also shaped America’s political history .

 

 


Colourful paintings

 

This painting was painted by Archibald Motley, an American painter from the Harlem Renaissance. This painting is entitled Nightlife as it illustrates a nightlife scene in a jazz club. On this painting we can see a well-dressed dancers wearing colourful evening dresses and suits.  They are having a good time together . It shows smart and  sophisticated people .

 


Places to visit in Harlem


If you go to Harlem you have to go and see the beautiful mural painted on a  brown stone  building. In fact the mural represents the musician Dizzie Gillespie, an iconic trumpet player. This mural gives an impression of liveliness and optimism. The mural was painted to pay tribute to the jazz musician who had an important role in the evolution of Afro-American music. He founded bebop jazz.

The Red Rooster is a restaurant located  310 Malcolm X Blud in Harlem, New York.
The Chef , Marcus Samuelson, prepares traditional  dishes and his most famous ones are his fried chicken and seafood stew.



Modern Harlem success stories


Marcus Samuelson was born in Ethiopia in the midst of violence but he became famous in Harlem . He has succeeded thanks to his determination, talent and inspiration. After the attacks of 9/11 he decided to open his own restaurant in Harlem inspired by the history and culture of the neighbourhood . Thanks to this inspiration, he became a star in a cooking show and cooked Obama's first state dinner.
